Comedian Christy Murphy of the Laundromat Show fame and hit website Inspiratational-Otter.com is launching a new website of short stories and essays simply entitled Read-My-Stories-Online.com. I met up with her after her reading at the famous Story Salon in North Hollywood to talk to her all about it.
Q: Why are you launching a new site?
A: Before I was a comedian, I was a writer and have been writing for a long time. Since, I make my living writing non-fiction online, I wanted to have a space where I could be more narrative with my work.
Q: I noticed the story you read tonight about your brother was funny tonight, but had a real touching quality to it? Is this a new direction?
A: [laughs] Yes, yes it is. Not all of the stories on the site will be comedy. Naturally, comedy seeps into my voice as a writer, because I’ve been doing it for over 15 years, but I wanted to show my more sincere side. It’s funny, because audiences actually like sincere family stories, and I’ve been told it’s more commercial. For me, it feels like a big risk! But I like it. It’s nice to say to people, this is a piece of my heart, you are welcome to it if you like.
Q: Well I did like it. When will the site officially launch?
A: The site is technically up and online, but it only has two stories up right now. It will officially launch in October, and will also feature audio stories. I have a lot of talented writer friends, so there is a chance I may be able to pursuade them into sharing their work or reading on my podcast. I hope people enjoy it. I am really enjoying putting it together.
Thank you for taking time to speak with me today. I can’t wait to read more.
